This composition was inspired at least in part by hearing composer Alice Parker talk about her then current fascination with writing “music that fits on one page.” I think the idea was to place a limitation on length and complexity in order to force reliance on the more basic elements of our musical language to create a meaningful piece. This setting is just under two minutes, but contains most of the elements of a normal choral anthem. There is a clear ABA structure with a coda, and the two sections musically represent the contrast found in the Hebrew Psalmist’s poetry.
